This album sits between A Night At The Opera (1975) with bangers like “You’re My Best Friend” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” and News of the World (1977) with the classic “We Will Rock You” and “We Are The Champions”.
On A Day At The Races (1976) we got the super-hits “Somebody To Love” and “Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy”. Talk about being on a roll… It was also the first Queen record I bought.

This turned out to be one of the most complex designs I have done since ELO’s “Out of the Blue” cover. So many small details. Now, let’s see if I can realise this idea I have for animating it, as all the creatures are now individual layers / objects…
Update: animated version here.
The original artwork was created by David Costa after a concept by Freddie Mercury. In 2022, the piece was sold at an auction in the UK for £21.000/- GBP.
